The Huskies defeated South Florida 19-16 on Saturday thanks to four field goals from Dave Teggart, including a 52-yarder with 17 seconds remaining. With the win, Connecticut (8-4) earned the Big East's automatic BCS berth.
"It wasn’t pretty," coach Randy Edsall said, "but all that counts is how many points you have to the opponent and we had more than they did so, again, to be heading to a BCS game and to win the Big East championship within seven years of being in this league and really the short time we’ve been a Division1-A program says a lot about the character, the resolve and the work ethic of all these people that are in the program now but even the guys that came before and the former players from when this program started."
Connecticut shares the Big East championship with West Virginia and Pittsburgh. The Huskies have only been an FBS school since the 2002 season, having left then Division I-AA after the 1999 season. The next two seasons they were a transitional team. In 2004, the Huskies began playing in the Big East.
The Huskies will find out which bowl they will play in during tonight's BCS selection show, which begins at 8:15 pm eastern time.
