Lisa Ling spoke about her Secret Society of Women on The View this week.  The veteran journalist recently had a miscarriage and felt empty.  Lisa Ling's Secret Society of Women was a byproduct of her pain from feeling like a failure.  Although the new website "for girls only" is more than about women who miscarry, it is based on similar visions as the Post Secret website and movement.

We know her as the journalist who, like Anderson Cooper, goes where the story develops, and often in places many veteran peers will not go.  Her style of reporting is poignant and full of compassion. When Lisa Ling announced on The View that she had a miscarriage 6 months ago, the pain of a loss only a mother can feel, came to the surface. Pain aside, she felt like a failure for not being able to bring a baby into the world after its conception. But, she turned her mental scars and anguish from the loss into a website that addresses the inner feelings of pain and failure.
She took lemons (miscarriage) and turned them into lemonade (new website for women).  She called it the Secret Society of Women.  No, it's not an underground Victorian society of elitist women who attend daily tea parties while their rich husbands dabble in golf or water polo.  Lisa Ling's Secret Society of Women is much more.
The Secret Society of Women - Not by Invitation Only, But Just For Girls
When Ling created the website, she envisioned having a place where other women can come and dish on their personal struggles in an open forum or anonymously. Although her miscarriage was the impetus behind the Secret Society of Women, it's more than that, as girls and women can use it to talk about their weight, poor choices, bereavement, employment, relationships, addictions, etc.  It is a one-stop-site for all things personal.
Although it sounds similar to the Post Secret movement that invites anyone to mail in their secret on post cards to be used in traveling art exhibits, it is far from that.  It is a place where women and girls can be measured not by the things they lack, but the heart they have and share for coming on board.  In short, Lisa Ling's Secret Society of Women website is about healing and acceptance through the storm.
